Studying and migrating to New Zealand: a guide for Vietnamese students

Studying in New Zealand starts with choosing a provider that follows the code for international learners and receiving an Offer of Place. After paying tuition, you apply for a student visa with evidence of at least NZD 20,000 a year for living costs and health insurance. You can work up to 25 hours a week during term, and may qualify for a Post Study Work Visa of up to 3 years after graduating. Permanent residency is a separate pathway, not an automatic result of studying.

Overview

What would you like to know?

01

Core requirements

Each school sets its own entry requirements. On the visa side, a New Zealand study application usually centres on five things.

  • An Offer of Place from a provider that enrols international students.
  • A tuition receipt, or evidence of a waiver or reduction.
  • Evidence of funds: at least NZD 20,000 for living costs for each year of study.
  • Health and travel insurance for your whole stay.
  • A medical exam and chest X-ray if Immigration New Zealand asks.

02

Costs to plan for

Your total cost includes tuition, living costs, insurance, the visa fee and flights. Tuition varies by school, field and level, so get quotes directly from providers.

  • Living-cost evidence: NZD 20,000 for each year of tertiary or English study. This is a visa threshold, not your real cost of living.
  • Student visa fee: from NZD 850.
  • Rent is usually quoted weekly; Auckland is typically the most expensive.

03

Scholarships

Scholarships for New Zealand mostly come from institutions, plus some New Zealand Government programmes. Most are partial and reduce tuition.

  • Look for scholarships on your target institution's site while applying.
  • Read the conditions for keeping a scholarship, and the deadlines.
  • Prepare essays and references early.

04

Choosing a school and course

New Zealand has eight universities, plus polytechnics and private providers. Providers that enrol international students must follow NZQA's code for international learners.

  • Compare institutions for your field, not only by overall ranking.
  • Consider the city: Auckland has more part-time work but costs more; smaller cities are easier on the budget.
  • If you plan to stay and work, check that your qualification and study length qualify for a Post Study Work Visa.

05

The student visa

The Fee Paying Student Visa lets you study in New Zealand for up to 4 years. You apply online once you have an offer and have paid tuition.

  • Receive an Offer of Place → pay tuition as the provider requires.
  • Prepare financial documents, insurance and any medical exams requested.
  • Apply online on the Immigration New Zealand site; the fee starts at NZD 850.

06

Work rights and after graduation

Since 3 November 2025, students can work up to 25 hours a week during term and full time in scheduled holidays. After graduating, the Post Study Work Visa lets you stay and work.

  • The Post Study Work Visa lasts up to 3 years, depending on your qualification level and how long you studied in New Zealand.
  • You usually apply within 3 months of your student visa ending.
  • The adult minimum wage is NZD 23.95 an hour from 1 April 2026.

07

From study to migration: the real picture

Studying does not automatically lead to residence. Residence in New Zealand depends on your occupation, experience, pay and Immigration New Zealand's criteria at the time you apply, and policy can change while you study.

  • Choose a field because you want that career, then consider migration options.
  • Follow official Immigration New Zealand announcements rather than social-media rumours.
  • Owen & Co. helps you understand options and prepare applications; we do not promise visa or migration outcomes.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need to show for New Zealand?

For living costs alone, you need at least NZD 20,000 for each year of tertiary or English study, plus tuition. Accompanying family members need more.

How many hours can students work?

Up to 25 hours a week during term (since 3 November 2025) and full time in scheduled holidays. If your visa still says 20 hours, apply to vary your conditions or for a new visa.

Can part-time earnings replace the funds I have to show?

No. The visa requires you to show enough living funds before you travel. Part-time earnings are extra, and a job is not guaranteed straight away.

Can I stay and work after graduating?

You may qualify for a Post Study Work Visa of up to 3 years, depending on your qualification and study length. You usually apply within 3 months of your student visa ending.

Can studying in New Zealand lead to residence?

Some people have moved from study to residence, but it is a separate pathway with its own requirements. Treat it as a possibility to prepare for, not a guaranteed outcome.
